Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hard surfaces

A resurgent the Russian player claimed his maiden championship for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a ex- world number one, has had a torrid period, winning just a single victory at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the American major.

Medvedev's varied form on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in particular - resulted in him falling of the top ten and ultimately separating with former coach Gilles Cervara.

Now collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a closely contested three-set victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This represents his initial trophy following the Rome competition and first on a hard court since spring of 2023.

Success also means he has secured twenty-one victories at 21 different events.

"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my children together, so to win a title is really nice," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my child her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his last six championship matches, comprising in Halle earlier this year.

The player's retrieving strategy and regular emotional displays on court had prompted observers to doubt if his skill to compete at the top level was concluded.

Yet the player has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and perform assertively, backed up by an enhanced service.

Medvedev fought back from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Moutet, winning 4 of the concluding five games to take the lead.

The competitors traded service breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial ATP Tour title, gained dominance to force a decider.

Moutet saved 4 initial chances in a tight third set before the champion broke to fifteen to serve for the match.

Appropriately, he secured the win with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a return after a lengthy match.
